What this site does not do

No analytics. No advertising. No tracking pixel, no fingerprinting, no social media button that phones home. No cookie is set by this site at all, which is why there is no banner asking you about one. The typefaces are served from this site rather than from a font network, so opening a page here sends your address to Google exactly never.

Hosting

The site is served by GitHub Pages, run by GitHub, Inc., 88 Colin P. Kelly Jr. Street, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA. Like every web server, theirs records the requests it answers: your IP address, the time, the page asked for, and what your browser says it is. I never see those records and they are not joined to anything else. The interest that justifies it is having a site at all and keeping it standing up.

GitHub is in the United States. It is certified under the EU US Data Privacy Framework and additionally uses the standard contractual clauses.

The contact form

The form on the contact page sends nothing anywhere. What you type into it stays in your browser; pressing the button hands it to your own mail programme, already addressed to me, and pressing the other one copies it to your clipboard. No relay, no service in between, and no server of mine, because there is not one. It used to pass through a form relay in the United States, and it no longer does.

So the only thing that reaches me is the email you decide to send, and it reaches me the way any email does. It stays in my mailbox as long as the conversation is live and as long afterwards as I have a reason to keep it; ask and it goes sooner.

The guestbook

The notes in the guestbook are issues on a public GitHub repository. Showing them here means asking GitHub for them, and asking GitHub for them tells GitHub you are reading this page. So the page does not ask until you press the button that says it will. Nothing is sent before you do. Writing a note yourself happens on GitHub, under GitHub’s own terms, and what you write there is public. A note only appears on this site after I have put the guestbook label on it, so nothing shows up here that I have not read first. If you wrote one and want it gone, write to me or close your issue on GitHub, and it leaves this page the next time it loads.

What appears on this page is the GitHub account name of whoever wrote the note, the date they wrote it, and the first four hundred characters of it.

What is kept in your browser

What this site remembers, it remembers in your own browser, and none of it is ever sent anywhere. It keeps the language you chose, the season you turned the dial to, whether you asked for sound and how loud, whether you have been here before, which essay you read last, how far you got in the long game, and where you got to in each of the five short games.

And it keeps what you typed into the Werkstudent calculator, so that it is still there when you come back. That is the largest of them: your gross pay, your hours, your tax class, whether you pay church tax, and how many of your working days you have used. Whether you pay church tax says something about your religion, and the law treats that as a special category, so it is worth saying plainly: it sits on your own machine, no server is ever told any of it, I cannot see it, and there is a button at the foot of the calculator that throws all of it away. Clearing your browser storage for this site does the same for everything on this list. None of it is stored to follow you; it is stored because the page cannot do what you asked it to do without it, which is the case the law exempts from consent.

Two of them are not strictly necessary, and it is fairer to say so: whether you have been here before, which only changes how the cover opens, and which essay you read last, which only marks a card. Both sit in your own browser, neither is sent anywhere, and clearing this site’s storage removes them with the rest.

Your rights

Access: Ask what I hold about you and I will tell you, and send you a copy.
Correction and erasure: If it is wrong I correct it. If there is no reason left to keep it, it goes.
Restriction and portability: You can ask me to stop using it while a question about it is open, and you can ask for it in a form you can take elsewhere.
Objection: Where I rely on my own legitimate interest, you can object, and then I need a reason that outweighs yours or I stop.
Withdrawal: Consent given can be taken back at any time, and taking it back does not undo what was lawful before.
Complaint: You can complain to a supervisory authority. Mine is the Bayerisches Landesamt für Datenschutzaufsicht, Promenade 18, 91522 Ansbach.

Two things that are not happening

Nothing here decides anything about you automatically, and there is no profiling. You are not obliged to give me anything; the only cost of giving me nothing is that I cannot write back.
